The most effective way to generate empathy--an essential first step to bridging brittleness between opposing fractions--is to share personal stories, not opinions. This story-sharing guide taps into my three decades of experience teaching the art of the personal essay and narrative nonfiction. Anyone can download the guide for free, which includes a sample essay exchange between people with opposing views, but you can also reach out to me about hosting a writing workshop for your group, which does require a fee. Contact: collinsmae@ccsu.edu.

The Bronzed Project’s Story-Sharing Guide includes the following:

  • Assorted advice and insights on navigating story exchanges

  • “Framing Your Story, Hearing Their Story”

  • “Starting a Story-Exchange Program in Your Community”

  • Sample Essays from two people with opposing views

  • “Tips from Conflict Resolution Expert Paula Green”

  • Sampler of Existing Story-Share Programs
